What Is a Teaser Bet?

A teaser is a parlay bet where you move the point spread in your favor on two or more games. The catch: the payout drops compared to a standard parlay. You're trading potential profit for a better chance of winning each leg.

How does a teaser actually work?

Say you like two NFL favorites. Both are laying 7 points. A standard 6-point teaser moves each line 6 points in your favor — now you only need them to win by 1 instead of 7. Both legs still have to win, just like a regular parlay. The sportsbook cuts your payout to account for the easier lines. You're not getting something for nothing.

The most common teaser is a two-team, 6-point football teaser. Basketball teasers exist too, usually at 4 or 4.5 points. The number of points you can move and the available payout depend on the operator — check the specific book's rules before placing one.

How is a teaser different from a parlay?

A standard parlay uses the original point spread lines with no adjustment. Teasers let you shift those lines. The tradeoff is a lower payout. If you want the full parlay odds, you keep the original numbers. If you want cushion on the spread, you take the teaser and accept less money back.

Teasers are spread bets, not moneyline bets. You're not picking outright winners — you're betting ATS (against the spread) on each leg, with the spread adjusted in your favor.

When does a teaser make sense?

Teasers are popular when key numbers are in play. In football, landing on 3 or 7 matters a lot. Moving a spread through those numbers can give you real value. Whether it's enough to offset the lower payout is the real question — and there's no guaranteed answer.
